Treasures to be Found at the Thrift Store

When you think of shopping at thrift stores, one of the first things you may think of is a bunch of old clothes.  Thrift stores are a great place to find a variety of items, many that may be new or nearly new.

Clothes

The largest category at most thrift stores is the clothing selection.  You can get several items at a thrift store for a fraction of the price you would pay in a retail store.  Many items still have the original price tags on them.  Besides receiving donations from individuals, some thrift stores receive donations of unsold items from major retailers.  Buying formal wear second hand is one way to save money on items that you plan on wearing only once or twice.  Also, in most cases they were only worn a time or two previously.

Thrift stores are a great source for children’s clothing since they grow out of them so quickly, the items should be in good condition and are less expensive then most other stores.

Household items

If you are in need of household items such as plates, bowls, glasses, and silverware check out your local thrift store.  Also, if you need serving plates and bowls for special parties, you may be able to find them for a fraction of retail price at a thrift store.

Many stores also receive donations of small appliances such as bread machines, toasters, coffee makers, and others that are still in good condition or never used.  Some couples donate wedding gifts they receive and do not want or have duplicates, so the donated items are brand new.

Books and DVDs

Along with clothing, most thrift stores have an over abundance of books.  If you read a lot, it is a good source of reading material besides checking books out from the library.  There may be books that you are interested in reading more than once; this is one way to save money on those books.  It is also a great place to find inexpensive books for children.  Most thrift stores also have a wide selection of DVDs.

Other items that can be found at thrift stores are furniture and holiday items.

Part of the thrill of thrift store shopping is the search for treasures.  You never know what you will find that will be a fraction of the regular retail price.  Thrift store shopping is one way to make your budget go further.  The selection is not as predictable as other stores but f you have the time, the extra searching may pay off in the end with how much money you can save.
