Tips for Saving Money at the Bookstore

Whether you’re a student, an avid reader, or you just like buying books, you will want to save money at the bookstore. Fortunately, you don’t have to do a lot of complicated things in order to get some good discounts on books. Here are a few tips that can help you save some money whenever you are in the mood to buy a book or two.

First, ask if there is a “membership” card for the bookstore that will allow you to get some special members-only discounts. Many bookstores will call, e-mail, or sometimes even text you when there is a sale in which members can save a good chunk of money. Keep in touch with your bookstore if you like to buy a lot of books. They will value you more as a customer because you’ve established a good relationship with them. Local bookstores are great for creating this type of customer-retail relationship that leads to good service.

Next, look for bargain books and buys. These are usually marked throughout the store. Look for carts and bookshelves that are specifically marked. Sometimes, you will get an even better discount because you are a member of the store. Sometimes you will get a discount for buying more than one item. Make sure that you ask if there is a sale going on. Sometimes the shelves or carts are not marked extensively and you’ll have to ask for more information.

Look for different publishers who have published the book. Some publishers exclusively have lines of books that they consider “budget books.” This is usually because the covers are simpler, the books are made out of recycled paper, or the books are typically smaller and perhaps even more readily available because of demand. One good example is Shakespeare’s works. Many publishers publish his works, and many of those publishers offer inexpensive books because there are many students who need them.

Ask the cashier or clerk if you can order a used book and have it shipped to the bookstore or to your home. Sometimes this has to be done at the store, especially if your bookstore is small and local and does not have a website. You could also check some local retailers who sell old and used books.

Look around for bargains and don’t be afraid to ask if there is a sale going on. Those are the key points of finding good deals at the bookstore.
