Tips for Lowering your Electric Bill

Many people wish to lower the amount that they are spending each month and save a little money. One essential expense, but one that can also be costly, is paying for electricity. However, there are many ways that you can use less electricity and in turn reduce the costs of your electricity bill. An additional bonus is that there are environmental benefits to using less electricity in your home. Here is an overview of some of the ways in which you can lower your electricity bill.

Lighting

One of the major uses of electricity in the home is lighting. By using less lighting you will use less electricity, therefore saving on your electricity bill. One of the easiest ways of doing this is by getting into the habit of turning out the lights when you leave a room. In many homes, there are several lights on at one time even when all the members f a household are all in the same room. Once you get into the habit, it is easy to remember to turn off all the lights.  

Another way of saving on the electricity is by buying energy saving light bulbs. Although the initial outlay for the cost of the bulb is greater than a regular bulb, overall it will make you great savings. Firstly, it will last for up to five years, whereas regular bulbs need replacing several times a year. Secondly, they use significantly less electricity than regular bulbs and over a period of time you will notice a big difference in your electricity bills.  

Tumble dryer

The tumble dryer is an electrical appliance that uses a substantial amount of electricity to run. While there are many advantages to having a tumble dryer, such as reduced drying time and less need to iron clothes, they are not economical to run. Instead, on a nice day, dry your laundry on a line outside or on a laundry maiden. On colder days, take advantage of having the heating on and dry larger items, such as towels, on the radiators around your home.  

Standby

There are mixed views on how much electricity is wasted by leaving electrical appliances on standby. However, there is no doubt that some electricity is wasted. It is best to turn off all electrical items overnight to reduce the amount of electricity that Is used, and wasted, by leaving on appliances such as computers or televisions.
