Social Security three Day Grace Period

Some people on Social Security or Supplemental Security Income, otherwise known as SSI, might be able to relate to this article better than others, while those who may have experienced this and not understand why will have the answers to their questions by the end of this article. Social Security and SSI payments are sent out in the mail to get to the recipients usually on or about the first of the month. This can change for a couple different reasons. If you are anticipating a check on the first of the month you might look at a couple of the following factors before reporting that your check has not come in the mail and you want to request that a new one be sent out to you.

Day of the week: If the first happens to fall on a Sunday, you can expect your payment in the mail on the Saturday before.

Weather Conditions: If the weather is bad in your local area and you get your payment sent to you in the mail, you might want to anticipate that your check will not come on time.

Before calling the Social Security Administration and sitting on hold for a long period of time to report that your check has not come, you should know that the Social Security Administration has three mailing days to get the check to you before it can be considered late, or lost in the mail and eligible for a replacement check. This can be very frustrating to find this information out after you have sat on hold not knowing that they have the three day grace period to do this. The three day grace period allows the United States Postal Service to get the check to you safely. This can be frustrating and an inconvenience if you have rent and other bills that are due to be paid on the first of the month and a late fee might be charged if it is not paid on time which is money that you have not budgeted for and might not have to spend because your check did not arrive when you expected it to.

If your check is late and you have bills like rent that is due on the first, you can have the Social Security Administration explain to your landlord that your check was in fact sent out, but for one reason or another it has not got to you yet, but they are allowed the three day grace period before doing anything to send you a replacement and if your landlord and other bill collectors are understanding and sympathetic to you being on Social Security, they will be okay with waiting a few extra days and not charge you a late fee because they have verified that the payment is in fact coming and should be to your mail box within a few days.
