Simple Ways to Save Money on Food Shopping

Food shopping can be expensive but unfortunately, it is an expense we cannot live without. When times are tough, being prepared and putting more thought into purchases can go a long way to reducing food shopping costs.

Make a plan

Having a plan is important. Set out a menu plan for the coming week and write a list of ingredients needed. Try to stick to the list as much as possible while shopping. Having a list will discourage impulse buys which are probably items that are not needed. Eating before leaving for the store is also a good idea. A hungry shopper is more likely to buy food to satisfy hunger rather than items on the list. Don’t forget to clip coupons before leaving for the store.

At the store

Take time perusing the aisles. Often grocery stores place ‘specials’ at the end of aisles to discourage shoppers from travelling down the aisles and lower priced items. An item on special is cheaper than the regular priced item but not necessarily the cheaper product overall.

Check prices carefully. Buying in bulk can save money but in some cases, buying several single items is cheaper than buying in bulk. Also, be sure to choose the correct item. A product could be offered in a particular weight or serving size only as a special, even thought the advertisement is by the whole range of products.

Don’t buy items to save money, only buy items which are needed or can be stored for later use. A bargain is not a bargain if it needs to be thrown away unused.

Check the food list to ensure all items are checked off before heading to the check out and have coupons ready.

Prepare meals at home

Save dining out for special occasions. Dining at a restaurant can be expensive and customers tend to order more food than usually eaten at home. Prepare lunches and take coffee from home for the work day. This can save money and be a healthier option too.

Don’t throw out leftovers. Leftovers can be used to make sauces, soups and extra meals.

Get together with friends and compare simple recipes. If planning a dinner with friends, a pot luck dinner is a great idea and will reduce food costs.

These simple ideas to save money on food costs are just the beginning. With a little imagination and flare many other ways can be discovered.
