Managing Student Loans

In order to get your student loan, you must have had a high school diploma or a GED. If you did not have one before applying to a tech or any other college, then there is good news for you! You can have your student loan dismissed and get all the money they have taken from you back.

These are the steps for getting loans issued under false certification dismissed:

Fill out the appropriate Department of Education loan discharge application. Then send the completed documentation to your student loan servicer. Make sure you have the correct address. Sometimes, there are two addresses: one for payments and one for everything else. When you mail it, send it by certified mail and attach a return receipt to it to make sure they did receive it. It will take about a month for them to get back with you.

If the school closed while you were going to school, you can fill out the school closure discharge form, and send it to who has your student loan. Make sure you have the correct address. There may also be two addresses for this documentation. When you mail it, also send it by certified mail and attach a return receipt to it to make sure they did receive it. It will take about a month for them to get back to you.

For more information regarding student loan discharge, including disability, the Federal Student Loan Fact Sheet offers additional information. If you are disabled and can’t work, you can get your loan dismissed. There is also a form for disability, but you need proof from a doctor that you are disabled.

If you do not know who owns your student loan, call the loan locator at 800-433-3243, and they will be able to tell you who has your student loan.

The Department of Education phone number is 800-621-3115. The person in charge of discharging loans due to false certification is Fallah Bandabaila, at 415-486-5629.

After you hear back from the Department of Education, your loan may be dismissed. Checks from the Internal Revenue Service may also be forthcoming.
