The government and what organizations and programs they decide to put so much funding into really leaves me seething. Lets take anti-abortion crisis pregnancy centers, for instance.
To dissect this, the word crisis. Crisis is defined by Dictionary.com as a condition of instability or danger, as in social, economic, political, or international affairs, leading to a decisive change. As we know, anti-abortion means against abortion, anti being defined as a person who is opposed to a particular practice, party, policy, action, etc. Anti is definite, meaning that under any circumstances whatsoever, they are going to be opposed to that specific practice, etc. In this case, the opposed being abortion. So logically, with just the name of these places, they are saying that yes, you are in a crisis, you may feel as if you are in some way, shape, or form in danger, you don’t know where to turn, and you’re most likely scared and panicked. Put your mind at ease, you can walk into one of these places. I mean, crisis is in the name of the place after all, they have to know what to do and how to help you; they’re trained professionals after all, right?
So walk right in, no one is going to judge you or the situation you have found yourself in; put your mind at ease and let yourself settle down for a minute because as soon as you walk through the door, they are going to let you know that you have options, that you’re not alone, and that they are there to help you. But under absolutely no circumstances whatsoever are you getting an abortion. No, that option is not yours and the $30 million of federal funding in the year 2006 alone is going to aid these organizations in telling you what your lack of options are.
The debate of abortion has been a long winded one since before 1973, when Roe v. Wade was passed declaring abortion legal and I have to give credit where it’s due; pro-lifers on several occasions have looked to facts in order to aid in their side of the debate. They have had to do this because of people who believe in choice. As anyone can vouch for, when you believe in something strongly enough, you are going to gather all the facts, figures, and statistics you can in order to get your point across. However, even with people against abortion taking the right route and digging into the facts in order to come out on top, I wish I could say that these trained professionals were doing the same.
While in the process of deterring women from the option of abortion, it has been proven by the Rep. Waxman’s study that 20 out of 23 of these federally funded clinics were giving out misleading and false information. The information given was (but is not limited to) claiming that abortion leads to infertility and will also increase your risk of breast cancer. Excuse me? Now one must ask where they are getting these alleged facts from. As a legal medical procedure why would people go on condoning something that has been proven to increase your chances of cancer? As soon as a doctor saw a pattern of infertility or cancer in women that have had abortions, I would think that they would step up and say something about it, perhaps go back to the labs and come up with different ways in order to terminate unwanted pregnancies.
While we’re at it, lets print brochures and hand them out to people dining in restaurants telling them that eggs lead to prostate cancer and drinking soda will definitively increase your chances of leprosy. And not only that, but we’ll get the government to give us $30 million of federal funding so we can spread the word.
