Are Emotions Critical to our Financial Health

Before we can fairly state that emotions are connected to our finances, let’s study the word.

Webster’s Dictionary defines emotions as “a conscious mental reaction (as anger or fear) subjectively experienced as a strong feeling usually directed toward a specific object and typically accompanied by physiological and behavioral changes in the body.” And what does that really mean? Let’s look at dictionary.net which defines it a little better; A mental force which simply and directly urges to action; hasty inclination; sudden motive; momentary or transient influence of.

So have you ever heard of anyone purchasing something by impulse or sudden desire? Women have been a little more notorious for these actions but men do not lag behind. We all do it, and if we truly examine ourselves we do it almost on a consistent basis. Wow, that donut looks really good and I sure am hungry, plus I didn’t have a very good day at work and something sweet will do me good.

The problem with our emotions being involved in our finances really depends on the power that we as individuals give to it. If I always give in to my inclinations and let myself be influenced by this thing or the other, I will not be considering my pocket but my physical wants and or needs instead.

Let’s consider nothing and esteem wisdom! Wisdom is what we must have. Finances are an integral part of who we are as people and as families. Financial struggles have been the ruin of many; but why? Would emotions’ be guilty?

Come up with a plan in which you consider your ways and spending, in the little things as well as the big things. What works for you may not be what works for somebody else. Eating more vegetables has never been my cup of tea but that might be what keeps you healthy.

If you are single, then set some goals for yourself. What will you consider before making a small or big purchase? Set your guidelines and limits and then live by them. Married couples should do the same. Even more so because of all the financial strain that can come between two people. If you are both on the same page and are always aware of how your money is spent then not only will your finances be healthy but your marriage as well.

When we begin to consider our finances in light of our emotions we will bring back health again to our pocket books as well as our minds. Won’t you consider that?
